The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare has assured Sadiq Abubakari Gariba, a journalist who was attacked during a live radio show in Tamale that his attackers will be brought to justice.

Gariba, who hosts a show on Dagbon Radio, was attacked by the Former Deputy Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hardi Pagazaa while discussing issues about the Ghana National Fire Service in the region. Pagazaa, who barged into the studio, held the journalist by the neck in an attempt to drag him out of the studio.

The attack has been widely condemned by various civil society organizations and the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA).

According to Starrfm.com.gh, the IGP, in a telephone conversation with Gariba to sympathize with him, gave him an assurance that the police will arrest the suspects and bring them to face justice.

This incident highlights the need for the protection of journalists in Ghana, especially as attacks on journalists seem to be on the rise in recent times.

For the most part, the role of the media in a democratic society cannot be overemphasized, and journalists play a critical role in keeping the public informed about important issues.

The attack on Gariba is a clear attack on press freedom and an attempt to stifle free speech, which is a fundamental right in any democratic society. It is therefore important that the police work swiftly to arrest the suspects and ensure that justice is served.

Furthermore, it is important that journalists are protected and allowed to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or attacks.

In conclusion, the attack on Gariba is unacceptable and the police must do everything within their power to ensure that those responsible are brought to book. The media must also continue to play their critical role in society by providing unbiased and factual information to the public.
